The Fingerplays / Flannel Board

Both of our non-book activities were about monkeys! The flannel board was Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed which is always fun since it's a classic and everyone can sing along.

The second song/fingerplay we did was Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree. I can't remember where I first found it but it is another classic that many of the parents knew. The preschoolers LOVED it!

5 little monkeys sitting in a tree
hold up 5 fingers
Teasing Mr. Alligator, "Can't catch me!"
put thumbs in ears and wiggle fingers
(whispering) Along came the alligator quiet as can be
put palms together like an alligator mouth and weave back and forth
And SNATCHED that monkey right out of the tree!
open palms wide and clap loudly on "snatched"

This week I only had two storytimes. There was no Preschool Storytime as I was at the Philadelphia Book Buzz. The two storytimes we did have were Toddler Time and First Art. Both went really great.

The Fingerplays / Songs / Art Project

In Toddler Storytime, we learned a new song called "Zoom Zoom Zoom". I learned it from Jbrary & once you listen to it, it'll be stuck in your head!

In Infant Storytime, we learned a new song called "Once There Was A Snowman". This is another song I learned from Jbrary.

In both storytimes we did "This Is Big, Big, Big" which I learned from Mel's Desk. It's a quick and fun little activity to get kids refocused and teach them about opposites.

This is big big big
Hold arms out to side
This is small small small
Cup hands together
This is short short short
Hold hands with palms facing each other
This is tall tall tall
Reach one hand above head
This is fast fast fast
Circle fists quickly
This is slow slow slow
Circle fists slowly
This is yes yes yes
Nod
This is no no no
Shake head

First Art is a monthly program I have in addition to an Infant Storytime. We start off with a regular storytime but I plan a craft to do after. This craft is typically super simple for little hands to do with assistance from their caregiver. I structure it like this so if the parent/caregiver isn't interested in the craft, then they can still attend the storytime.

This month we did paper snow globes. I found it on Pinterest. It's a great chance for little ones to practice holding a crayon and making marks on the paper. I also had foam stickers out for them to test out.

Preschoolers, Toddlers, InfantsRachel Kohl1 Comment

Last week's storytime theme was all about cats! I had originally planned for the Preschoolers and Infants but with the cancellation of Dance Me A Story, I had to quick put together a Toddlers storytime. Not difficult -- just a combination of books from the Preschoolers and the Infants.

Flannel Board Stories

We also did two flannel board stories -- Little Cat & Five Little Kitties.

The Little Cat flannel board is a finding game. I printed out and laminated five different kinds of hats and one (slightly larger than the hats) cat. This way even the little ones can see him poking out and guess. Then the kids and I chanted "Little Cat, Little Cat, Are you under the _____ hat?". We then looked under each hat for the cat.

I found this cute, easy, attention grabbing flannel board on Storytime Katie.

The Five Little Kitties flannel board is another fun one. For this one, I printed out brightly colored, drawn cats and large nickles.

It's a repetitive, counting story.

Down around the corner at my mom's pet store
were five little kitties, and not one more.
Along came someone with a nickel to pay
and they bought the little kitty and they took it away.

It then counts down to four, three, two, one, all the kitties have homes! I would then replace each kitty with a nickel. With the Preschoolers, I then explained that a nickel is worth 5 cents and we then counted by 5s.

I found this flannel board on Mel's Desk.

Bonus Songs!

I've recently discovered Jbrary and I am now kind of obsessed. This week we learned "I'm A Little Kitty" to the tune of "I'm A Little Teapot". This song was really fun with the Preschoolers and Infants (it would probably have been fun with the toddlers except it was a huge group this week & proved hard to wrangle in). I may have also given a little scare to one innocent infant.
