Paint Night

From the Director’s Desk

It has been such a pleasure getting to know our patrons and to see how much the library means to everyone.  The deep sense of community truly makes this a special place to live and work .  I'm thankful for the opportunity to serve as director of this wonderful community treasure. Bu as you know, the library can't exist on love alone.

The population has continued to grow in our service area. It became clear several years ago that it was necessary to upgrade the facility to keep pace with increased public need and demand.   The Library applied for and was awarded a Keystone Grant for Public Libraries in the 2014 grant cycle.  The grant requires partnering with a municipality, which in our case was Concord Township. The grant is a 50-50 matching grant.  Our application specified $136,684 in total project costs; half ($68,342) of the project costs coming from the grant and the other half coming from the Library’s capital funds. The Grant request covered six renovation projects for areas original to the 1989 construction:

Roof replacement

New windows

New carpeting

New programmable thermostats

New electronic door locks

Seal coating of the parking lot.

The Grant was formally awarded on January 12, 2015. Windows, thermostats and seal coating were completed in the summer of 2016.  The carpeting project in particular was a significant disruption, so the Library closed for the month of February 2017.  We took advantage of the closure to paint the entire interior, and refresh the lighting.   One very pleasant surprise has been to see a reduction on our utility bill of 26% in 2016.

We still need to upgrade and replace our HVAC system and are actively researching grants and donations. That being said, with our new director and two new librarians, we are poised for our next great leap forward. We are aiming to increase both our children’s and adult’s programming, both inside and out of the library building, as well as expand and update parts of our collection. We will be looking to forge partnerships with other community organizations who share our vision and ideals and whose objectives complement our own. Stay tuned for more greatness from the Rachel Kohl Community Library.

We could use your help, both monetarily or with gifts in kind.

With your donation, we can continue to bring the very best to Rachel Kohl Library. Come on in and check us out!

Thank you,

Susan Sternberg
